Democrats knocked out Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk and New Hampshire Republican Senator Kelly Ayotte with challengers Tammy Duckworth and Maggie Hassan, but otherwise gained no Senate seats, despite having fielded promising candidates in state after state.
